Glanding of Ex e Apparatus

Glands used in Zone 1 should be component approved (stamped Ex e).

Brass universal glands certified Ex d and Ex e are often used.

All enclosure gland fixings must be locked with shake-proof washer behind the lock nut. When the cable entry is via a threaded hole in the enclosure wall a lock nut should be fitted to hold the gland fitting firmly.

Glands must maintain IP54 degree of protection and may need an additional nylon IP washer.

Plastic glands can be used as long as they are fully certified with a component certificate.

13.5.1. Superceded Gland Requirements

Before 2007 there were no gland construction standards giving requirements for use in Ex locations. Ex e and Ex n equipment only required glands to meet IP and mechanical protection, therefore, uncertified brass glands could be used

Inspections of glands in installations constructed before 2007 should confirm that they still provide adequate IP and mechanical strength.
